Good options for the other 50%
Home-cooked
Home-cooked food is a great option that gives you more flexibility with the ingredients used. Plain cooked proteins like chicken, beef, or turkey, with cooked vegetables, work well alongside Lyka.

Avoid: onion, garlic, grapes, and macadamia nuts, which are toxic to dogs.
If you plan to prepare half of your pup's food at home, it's best to consult with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, pet nutritionist, or holistic veterinarian to make your pup’s diet remains complete and balanced.
Dry Kibble
Whether you choose premium kibble or a more budget-friendly option, kibble is a highly processed form of food and isn’t the type of diet we recommend as the main source of nutrition for dogs.
Kibble is popular because it’s convenient, shelf-stable and often more affordable. However, the cooking and processing involved in producing kibble can affect the ingredients and nutrients in the finished food.
If you’re looking for a convenient, shelf-stable alternative to kibble, you could consider a freeze-dried whole-food diet. Freeze-dried food can offer a less processed option while still being easy to store and serve.
When choosing kibble to pair with Lyka, look for one that:
- Uses named meat proteins (e.g. chicken, lamb) as the first ingredient
- Is free from fillers like corn, soy, or wheat
- Has no artificial preservatives, colours, or flavours
- Is appropriate for your dog's life stage and size
Avoid: beet pulp, kibble that lists legumes (peas, lentils, chickpeas) as a primary ingredient, and high levels of grain fillers.

The portion size on your Lyka plan is calculated as 50% of your pup's daily needs. Use your kibble or other food's feeding guide to calculate the other 50% based on your dog's weight and their recommended daily serving size.
